Our aviaries measure 4m x 1.2m x 1.2m One third is sheltered and two thirds are open to the sun and rain, they  are fully enclosed underneath as this prevents anything from getting underneath and disturbing the birds (such as cats, rabbits, foxes, wild birds).

They are also covered in electric fencing wire; this is to keep possums, rats, wild birds off the roof and front wire as we don't want anything to frighten them.

The aviaries are fitted with misters that can be programmed to come on 1-20 times per day for any length of time and these are used prior to breeding season and in the hot summer days.

The aviaries are mounted 1.3 meters above ground level, which not only makes it easier to clean underneath but makes the bird's perches above 2.2 metres above ground level, this makes the birds feel more secure as they are perching much higher then the human eye.

Below our suspenders is soil covered with pebbles. We have introduced worms to the soil and now have an active worm farm - all droppings, foods scraps disappear, it works extremely well.

The water bowls are also programmable and generally they fill up 3 times per day, so the birds always have cool water. Parrots like to bath and can easily empty their water bowls.

Being the exotic parrots that they are, they primarily feed seed fresh fruit, vegetables and nuts everyday. Typical favourites would be corn, apple, orange, passion fruit, beetroot, spinach, peanuts, and almonds - but they will eat almost anything offered.

Our aviaries face to the east and our nest boxes are hung in the back corner. The aviaries were built facing east because of the direction of our property. This has proven to be a good choice. In the winter and early spring all parrots will hang on the front wire in the morning, basking in the sun. They seem to love it.

Nest boxes are hung in the walkway and are easily accessible (with a small ladder) for inspection. The walkway is fitted with inferred camera's that can be placed on whatever nest box is required. They can be viewed on our television on a spilt screen system. This enables inspection without disturbing the birds. The cameras are also an excellent security measure as they are infrared. If a noise or disturbance is heard we can just turn on the television and see what is going on. We also have cameras in the trees viewing the entire aviary complex.

The cameras view inside one of our nestbox - it gives us an insight into their private world that we otherwise wouldn't see

Our parrots are placed side by side and able to see each other in the off season but are partitioned in the breeding season as they can become aggressive towards their neighbour and spend more time fighting rather than breeding.
